The fishing harbour of Hout Bay today is one of the busiest in the Western Cape with a thriving tuna, snoek and crayfish industry. Visitors are able to watch the off loading of catches whilst enjoying excellent fish and chips right on the water's edge - food that simply could not be fresher.
For those who prefer a more elaborate menu there's the more sophisticated Mariner's Wharf or the Chapman's Peak Hotel - located at the foot of the famous scenic Chapman's Peak Drive.
The "Republic of Hout Bay" as it is locally known, is a study of the economic contradictions and extremes that epitomises the new South Africa. The fishing community, who have lived on the slopes of the Karbonkelberg for many generations, looks out over the harbour to the breathtaking mansions on the opposite side of the bay, where, in close proximity, extreme luxury and shantytown poverty share the same magnificent sunsets.
