Casey Smartt demonstrates finishing his Dead Head Minnow fly, a great fly for Striped Bass on Canyon Lake. His technique is useful for many streamer patterns where you want to maintain the shape of the head and prevent wrapping the tail of the fly around the hook.

Filmed at the 2010 FFF Gulf Coast Conclave in New Braunfels, TX.

  • killer, that looks good. you should upload how to tie that pattern.

  • Unfortunately he was sharing just the technique that day so I don't have a vid ot the tie. Like you I want to learn it since it looks like a great mullett imitation and pushes a lot of water when retrieved.

  • Nothing worse than a fouled fly.

  • Nice!!!

  • @Gartooths

Thank you Casey, its a beautiful fly!

  • did he use the magic tool to work with the body?

  • great idea and it adds no weight thanks

  • The video turned out good Buddy. The body is made with a dubbing loop. To dub the body, make a 5-inch long loop with the thread and insert a mixture of grey and white craft fur and some silver Lite Brite shredded flash, twist the loop tight, and palmer it from the base of the tail to the eye of the hook. Pick out fibers with Velcro.

  • it looks like he might just use a dubbing loop for the body.
