Today it was a little bit windy and I had a chance to test my vawt wind turbine. I am convinced that this system will work for large scale energy production. I do not know any wind turbine, vertical or horizontal with such a simple wing design. There is no mechanisms to adjust the turbine to wind direction. It is omni directional by design. Paper used as flaps. However in real world applications flaps could be manufactured from plastic materials. Since sale composed of small flaps, they could be manufactured as large as possible. Soon I will test this in the water by replacing paper flaps by very thin sheet metal. You can also visit http://www.flapturbine.com for related videos.

  • Maybe, try making the flaps airfoil shaped.

  • You are absolutely right. This is a patent pending system and it was in the patent application that flaps should be airfoil shape. When flaps are designed like airfoils, this turbine would act like a drag turbine when it start rotating. Once it speeds up, it would act like a lift type (H Rotor) turbine. Therefore this would be a hybrid turbine between drag and lift type.

  • merhaba

elinize sağlık etkileyici bi çalışma olmuş.

    türbin artık bir direğe kavuşmuş.

    flaplar için kullandığınız malzeme nedir

    ilk bakışta kağıda benziyor.

  • Yes, flaps are made of paper. I am working on new savonius which will have plastic flaps.

  • Good idea!! A lot of moving parts to look after though. Turbine blades are a bit easier dont you think?

  • Thank you,

The biggest problem with action type VAWT is that they can't reduce the exposed

area of the sail mowing in upwind direction. The solutions proposed to manage this are very complex, inefficient and not scalable. If you do this with small flaps as shown in these video it is much easier to manage. Yes there are a lot of flaps (mowing parts) but there are no mechanisms to control them, everything is done by the wind.

  • I see I'm not the only one who got this brilliant idea.. Great design :)
