Take a tour of Popes' Palace of Avignon in Avignon, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.

Hi, I am Naomi and I am very excited to show you the world's greatest attractions.

When most people think of the papacy, their thoughts go to the Vatican City in Rome.

However, there was a time when the popes dwelled in a palace in Avignon, France.

In 1309, Pope Clement V fled Rome when turmoil erupted after his election.

Until 1377, the papacy remained at the beautiful palace in Avignon through the reign of several popes.

Avignon continued to be until the Vatican's control for many more years.

The Pope's palace was and is still the largest Gothic palace in Europe.

The vaulted ceilings, arched doorways, murals and turrets all make this palace a worthy sight.

Thank you for watching our travel video series. See you next time.
