You do not have to x-ray the SIRAD sensor film to see results. Common smoke detector foils will visibly radiate the sensor as shown here. The film is calibrated for gamma exposure and the smoke detectors emit alph radiation. Normally the plastic film on the sensor will protect it from detecting alpha which cannot go through your skin. That plastic film has been removed. The sensor is thus "tricked" here into registering gamma instead of relatively harmless alpha. Do not touch the smoke detetor foils with your fingers, use gloves when handling to avoid exposure
. Smoke detector foils today are two millimeters in diameter but have the same effect as these older 4mm foils shown above. The "foil" looks like a tiny button inside the smoke detector. If you don't know what you are doing or are unsure of yourself don't mess with the smoke detector. Take your sensor or monitor to the dentist and have him x-ray it to see it work. Buy an extra key chain monitor as they are cheap and fry it with the x-ray so you can see all the shades of the monitor.
