I do not own the rights to this song.

My pappy said "Son your gonna drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln"

Have you heard the story of the hot rod race
Where the Fords and the Lincolns were setting the pace?
That story is true, I'm here to say
Cause I was driving that model A.

It's got Lincoln motor and its really souped up
And that model A body makes it look like a pup
It's got eight cylinders, uses them all
Got overdrive, just won't stall

With four barrel carbs, and dual exhaust
With four, eleven gears you can really get lost.
It's got safety tubes, but I ain't scared
Breaks are good, and tires fair

Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
And the moon and the stars were shining bright
We was drivin up old grapevine Hill
Passing cars like they were standing still

All of a sudden, in the wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by
I said "Boys thats a mark for me"
But by then the tail lights was all you could see

Now the fellas all rid me for being behind
So I thought I'd make that Lincoln unwind
Took my foot of the gas and man alive
I shoved it on down into over drive

Well I wound it up to 110
My speedometer said that I hit top end
My foot was glued like lead to the floor
And that's all there is, and there ain't no more

Now the boys all thought that I'd lost my sense
And them telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said "Slow down, and I see spots!"
And the lines on the road just looked like dots

Took a corner, side swiped a truck
And I crossed my fingers just for luck
My fenders was clicking that guard rail post
The guy beside me was white as a ghost

Smoke was coming from out of the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
I knew I could catch him, And I thought I could pass
Don't you know by then we'd be low on gas

Had flames coming from out of the side
And you could feel the tension, man what a ride
I said "Look out boys, I've got a license to fly"
And that Caddy pulled over and let us by

Now all of the sudden she started knocking
Down in the dips she started rocking
I looked in the mirror. Red light was blinking
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln

Well they arrested me and they put me in jail
And they called my pappy to throw my bail
And he said "Son, you're going to drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop driving that Hot Rod Lincoln"

  • @rasalas2x ohh ok that song goes way back then. its gotta be a true story because i lived it. i can out run the cops just cant out run 2 way radios. lol

  • great song...vut its very true...ford/lincoln cant touch GM in a race...lol

  • @72ERIK Original written 1951 by Charlie Ryan and recorded by him in 1955. Reached top 100 in 1960 and also recorded by Johnny Bond that year which was also very popular. Charlie Ryan wrote the song about his Hot Rod Lincoln and the song is a true story. C Cody recorded in 1972 and is the best known version due to easy marketing by am and fm radio and increased access by listeners.

  • my dad,,, as a kid i used to shine the light for him as he souped up cars. learned every thing i know cause of him, and one day i built a beast and he dedicated this song to me, cus i love to race,,, cause of him. as the song says,, everythig happened acordingly. lol

  • larry is correct this is asleep at the wheel, but matters not ,this is an ace version of the song. in my opinion commander cody [origial vesion] is the best i,ve heard to date though.

  • Always A Classic

  • @BSmenut It is one of the best rap songs ever. But not the first, 'cause it's actually a remake of "Hot Rod Race" with the words changed.

  • This IS NOT CDB...... it IS however Asleep at the Wheel.... I own both Versions of the song. However, I think that Bill Kirchen's version is one of the best... (original guitarist on the Commander Cody recording of "Hot Rod Lincoln") George Frayne aka "Commander Cody" did more to make the song famous however... getting to #9 on the charts.
