  • Did you say you changed the selenium cell? Did you find a new one, and where?

I bought a Canon 7 in Japan for US$75 for the body only. A bit of rust on the top of the camera but otherwise very clean inside and working very well. I bought the same 50mm 1.4 lens for about $200 in excellent condition.

    Thanks!

  • Selenium cell is an old Semiconductor Material that produce by ligtfall several 100 Milivolts of DC Voltage these Voltage

Drive an Analog Millivolt or Microvoltmeter

to get the Shutter Speed Value

Correct Selenium Cell are Worldwide Discontinued but not Silicon or

Galliumarsenid cells this have a little

other Characteristics that the Selenium one (more Cell Voltage).

But im Using a Variable Resistor POT

or known as a Voltage Divider to Set

the rigth Voltage Range Value on the Scale.

  • Im Electronician and holder of a Amateuer Radio Licence Use the Cell at the Anode of the Silicon Ligthcell with a variable Trimmer Resistor in Series to the + Point of the Inbuilt Ligthmeter and alingment the Meter Scale of the Camera with the variable Resistor For Alingment you can youse an Modern Gossen Ligthmeter to Set the Camera Ligthmeter Scale! I do This several Years to Replace defectious Selen Cells on Old Cameras with Selen Cell Meters Since im as a old Camera Collector
  • cock starter? lol

    don't you mean cocking arm...

  • The Silicon or Galliumarsenid Cells are avaiable in Different Case and Ranges by the well Known Farnell or Distrelec Manufacturers Produced by Siliconix National Semiconductors/ Motorola Hewlwett Packard and others! searching out the Catalogues The Alingnment Process is Simple Use a new Modern Ligthmeter shutter Speed Meter from Gossen or others to Set the Voltage Divider POT in Series to Set the Rigth Scale Range on the Inbuilt Ligth Meter! Remember its only Analog Electronics.

  • It is beautiful. I am thinking og buying one, if I can find one. I would like to know, is it difficult for someone that has never shot with a film camera to use? I am not technically skilled in these cameras. I have only shot with digital Nikon D80 camera. I have some idea, but would like to know if this would be hard to learn or use immediately. I would rally like to experience shooting with film and I am really loving the Rangefinder camera idea. I would appreciate any feedback, anyone?

  • Thanks for the video on this. I have a Canon 7, and I like it very much. I often use it with the nice and cheap Russian lenses. It is probably the last of the classic era of rangefinders.

  • I found a Canon 7 with a Canon 50mm f1.4 for $150 in total a few weeks ago. The light meter doesnt work but the camera and lens are in mint condition otherwise. Ive shot a few rolls of film with it and it works great.

  • srebalov,

I finally found how to adjust the light meter. When you open the film door tip the camera forward. You can see a half-circle hole above where the camera door was, just under the meter. The screw inside controls the needle of the meter. I also found a Canon specialist here in Japan and he gave me a good deal for an overhaul of my Canon P (about US$165). I also found the same lens as yours- 50mm 1.4, for $200 with lens hood in beautiful condition. Enjoy! Check jiri_e on ebay for Canons!

  • Srebalov,

Next time I have vacation how about I take about 50 or 10 Canon 7s and visit you and we drink some beers and fix those cameras!

    ;-)

  • Srebalov,

Thanks for the information. I doubt that I would do this myself, but its good to know that this is possible. My meter seems to be working for now but you never know...
