LATEST: New York Prepares: Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene has shut down New York and menaced other cities as it steams up the East Coast.

It's unloaded a foot of rain on North Carolina and Virginia and knocked out power to more than 1.9 million homes and businesses. At least seven people have been killed so far.

The hurricane made its official landfall just after first light near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, at the southern end of the Outer Banks, the ribbon of land that bows out into the Atlantic Ocean.

It is due to hit New York this lunch time. Hurricane warnings extend north to Nantucket, Massachusetts and a tropical storm warning extends all the way to the south coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.
