http://jamesbrauer.com - For today's book review, I take a look at Chapter 5, -Evaluating Teachers,- from John Merrow's book -The Influence of Teachers.-
Through this chapter, John tackles the notion of teacher evaluation and critically analyzes why data isn't used a component of teacher evaluation? It appears as though a top-down management-style still exists within public schools, which causes great distrust and lack of collaboration. More importantly, it erodes as the possibility of teachers feeling empowered, having agency, having control, being self-motivated, taking responsibility, and-or feeling efficacious.
I believe that teacher evaluations should definitely contain evidence of student achievement, but it should also be only a single component of the overall teacher evaluation process.
Teachers should also be able to identify their own performance goals, create their own action steps, demonstrate progress toward their goals, and remain accountable for the results.
