Finding a good architect can prove to be difficult with so much competition out there for your busines.

Hugo Tugman, self build design expert, provides some great tips on what to look for.

I think the most important thing is people often talk about chemistry, its tremendously important that the chemistrys right. Actually I would say yes the chemistry is not un-important, its important that this is someone you can communicate with.

Certainly at Architect Your Home, we make sure that the architects we are involved with are good communicators. Thats one of the most important things in choosing them. Theyve got to have relevant experience.

There are a lot of architects whove spent many years designing office buildings, or hospitals. They dont necessarily know how to do a loft conversion or a kitchen extension. Its important they have relevant experience, its important to have someone who can communicate with you, not just about what you want, but about the process, because to me, the most important thing which, very interestingly, I dont believe comes across, particularly on these TV programmes a lot, is the design process, starting with the big picture, starting with the main moves.

What are you hoping to achieve, how can you achieve it in broad terms and then gradually introducing the detail. Getting to a point where you can then control the process and build it.
