This was a simple editing practice session using Final Cut Express HD. In this clip I've taken the first several (6-7) minutes of the movie "The Matrix" (the scene where agents try to apprehend Trinity), and cut it down to 3 minutes 7 seconds, less than half the original length. The objective was to be able to tell the story of the scene as in the original, maintaining continuity and smooth flow, but with as few frames as possible. I had to work with the existing sound effects and score without cutting sound in any way that was noticeable; again, the flow had to be maintained. I think it turned out pretty good. Again, this was simply an experiment, no big deal.

  • If this is the story of Trinity's escape, you still need to establish who she is before all the combat. We're all so familiar with the film, but if we weren't, I don't know that she'd read before she & the cops throw down. And at that point, it looks like the story is about the cop.

  • Very good point. Thanks for this input.

  • Very smooth editing.

Question: How did you manage to capture the video into FC ?

  • I used a program called Snapz Pro X (on my Mac) to capture the DVD video as it played on my screen, saved that to QuickTime, and imported the QT clip into Final Cut for editing.

  • OMG! Great quality from a screen capture!

Did the capture result in 30 FPS ?

  • I captured this clip at 24 fps; however, SnapzPro X will allow video capture from the screen at frame rates from 1 to 30 (in increments of 1).

  • Trinity is my number one most favorite lead women fighter in a movie next to lara croft...

  • poor cops

  • awesome

  • lol imagine if she had failed XD

  • This was perfectly edited, well done! Experiment success, I would think.

  • There's some good cutting there, especially in her fight with the cops. You cut it down to an anime style. I have an Iomega Buz video capture card in an old G3 -- the scramble on the video out from the DVD doesn't block the Buz, so I can capture clips from DVD that way. But I'm going to try snapz -- mainly because I can't burn Itunes video straight to DVD.
