Indonesian Militant Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence

An Indonesian militant has been sentenced to 10 years in jail on charges related to his role in the operation of a terrorist training camp. Abdullah Sunata also had interactions with prominent terror suspects implicated in the 2002 Bali bombings that claimed more than 200 lives and left hundreds more injured.

A Jakarta court has sentenced Muslim militant Abdullah Sunata to ten years in prison on Wednesday, on terror charges related to a paramilitary camp he helped run in Aceh Province.

33-year-old Sunata was found guilty of participating in a paramilitary training camp in Aceh believed to be funded by Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who is also on trial on terror charges.

[Suhartoyo, Presiding Judge, East Jakarta Court]:
"He has been proven legally and convincingly guilty of committing a crime to do evil conspiracy, attempting or helping to commit criminal acts of terrorism and intentionally providing assistance to the perpetrators of criminal acts of terrorism."

Sunata was arrested in June 2010 for his involvement in the Aceh training camp. He later became a witness in Bashir's trial, although he testified that he did not know Bashir personally.

Sunata was also found to have interacted with a number of prominent terror suspects who had been implicated in the 2002 Bali bombings that left more than 200 people dead.

"The defendant is sentenced to imprisonment for ten years."

Indonesia has been successful in recent years in tackling Islamist militants targeting symbols of the West and the secular government, but there has been a wave of parcel bomb attacks and plots against top political figures, including the president.

Militant attacks and incidents of religious intolerance have risen in the past months, with mobs lynching three followers of a minority Islamic sect and torching two churches on Java Island.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country.
