@mrkitanai1 Gracie still had to do stuff. It's not enough to know how to apply a choke, you have to actually do it. Let's say Gracie had no real strategy. He would have been knocked out and all of his technical prowess would mean nothing. Gracie is a great fighter (even if he does juice), style has little to do with it. Gracie did well because he had a plan that his opponents weren't prepared for.

there's no choking or submission moves in wrestling, no way the wrestler could have defended any locks or chokes.

@ImSoOffended That's not true. The art plays a HUGE role! Look at the early UFC matches between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock. Shamrock was physically superior to Royce. He was MUCH bigger, stronger, and more powerful. Yet the ART of Gracie Jiu Jitsu allowed Royce to nullify Ken's strength and power advantage. You think Royce would have won if he was a karate or kung fu practioner? Of course not! Gracie Jiu-Jitsu allowed him to WIN!!

@ImSoOffended you dont know what your talking about

it comes down to the fighter rather than the art.

@CombatSportFan I'm a huge Rulon Gardner fan, but, come on, let's be real. If I recall correctly, Gardner was much, much heavier when he fought Yoshida. He had a distinct size/weight advantage.

@DaktorPhil Off the top of my head, Olympic wrestler Rulon Gardner defeated Olympic judoka Hidehiko Yoshida in 2004. Probably the most high profile example.
