Acoustic protest song... A song I wrote after the recent funeral of Capt Martin Driver who was killed in Afghanistan..He was from my village and the footage at the end is from the church just round the corner from where I live...I have a deep respect for our service men and women and this is for them.
They seem like kids that go off to fight, and lose their innocence overnight
when the should be having fun and chasing girls
the powers that be dont understand, they turn them in to fighting men
then send them unprepared and into war
When your just 18 it shouldn't be like this, to watch your friends get blown to bits, and fearing for your life each passing day
there's just one thing that should blow you away it's holding your girl and hearing her say I love you, do you love me too
A Mothers love shouldn't be this way, praying for her son each day, and hoping he'll come out the other side
to her he'll always be a child, running free and running wild
and looking to the day he takes a bride
Wars a lot to answer for, it's brought so much grief to so many doors, so many sons and daughters never come home
caused by fools and lunatics who seem to see some sense in it
but they never see the tears in a mothers eyes
tell me why oh why do we still go to war
The unnecessary loss of youth, stolen by lies and hidden truths, stashed there in the body bags and coffins and familiar flags
on a long flight home to friendly shores, their youth is gone forever more, lost there in a foreign place, disappeared without a trace
So much promise now it's gone, taken by the bullet and the bomb, in the unrivaled stupidity of war
Mothers tears dont count at all for the sons who had to fall, so much left to give but now they're gone
tell me why oh why do we still go to war
Will we ever raise our flags as one, will we ever stop running from the guns, will our children ever grow without the fear of one day knowing they'll be going off to war
Is there any answer to this pain, repeating the same mistakes time after time and over and over and over again
there's so much that we could do thats right, but all we seem to do is hate, I hope to god it's not to late
So much promise now it's gone, taken by the bullet and the bomb, in the unrivaled stupidity of war
Mothers tears dont count at all for the sons who had to fall, so much left to give but now they're gone
tell me why oh why do we still go to war
tell me why oh why do we still go to war
