What tourists of Berchtesgaden usually don't get to do.
Not even the "Fuehrer" had a chance to do this.

A rare view of the elevator shaft (Liftschacht) at the Eagle's Nest.

Kurdirektion staff member and chief engineer Herbert Eglauer and his team allowed a dangerous ride on the roof of the brass elevator (Fahrstuhl), which daily transports hundreds of tourist during the opening months. This activity is known as lift-surf or elevatorsurfing. According to staff members the same lift shaft was used in the James Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever" for the scene in a Las Vegas high-rise. A stunt double did all the climbing scenes. Here there are no doubles. One wrong step and you will end up crushed or falling down the shaft, that is reality. Standing on top the roof watching the cable sand weels, feeling the danger is a rush. Dangerous fun.

The sturdy construction still works perfectly after many decades. It is periodically tested and well maintained. Although not emphasized, there is a small emergency elevator in the same shaft, designed to evacuate passengers from the cabin, if it was to get stuck for any reason.

This documentary shows an unseen section of the Kehlsteinhaus. The facility is located on the Kehlstein mountain in Berchtesgaden. The technical installation are closed to the general public.

The German uniforms were worn as disguise. Posing as "Bundeswehr" soldiers on maneuvers, we accessed and entered several restricted sites and ruins on Obersalzberg and documented them. It worked and no one had any doubts, as there are commonly army units in the region.

The lake seen at the beginning is the famous Königsee. The electric boats are very silent and do not pollute the surrounding environment.
The large rock formations are on a panorama trail above the Kehlstein's summit.

Some of the perspectives may be familiar from "War and Remembrance"(Episode 9).

The Kehlsteinhaus was commissioned by Martin Bormann, with construction proceeding over a 13-month period. It was completed in the summer of 1938, prior to its formal presentation to Hitler on his 50th birthday on April 20, 1939. It is situated on a ridge at the top of the Kehlstein mountain 1,834 m reached by a 6.5 km long and 4 m wide road that cost 30 million RMs to build (about 150 million euros in 2007, adjusted in line with inflation). It includes five tunnels but only one hairpin turn and climbs 800 m.
Today the building is owned by a charitable trust, and serves as a restaurant. The restaurant features an indoor dining area and an outdoor beer garden. It is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for Britons, Canadians and Americans attracted by the historical significance of the "Eagle's Nest". The house can be reached on foot (two hours of walking) or by bus from Obersalzberg, the road having been closed to normal traffic since 1952.

The theatrical aspects of the project are already encountered with
the 124 m marble-like stone tunnel that leads to a splendid brass elevator.
In only 41 seconds, the lift travels another 124 meters into the Eagle's Nest building itself.

Sometimes referred to as "Teahouse" or "Teehaus". In fact the correct term was "D-Haus", short for "Diplomatischer Empfangshaus".
It was built as an extension of the Obersalzberg complex erected by the Nazis in the mountains above Berchtesgaden. The Kehlsteinhaus was intended as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler to serve as a retreat for Hitler and place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries

Some may recognise the score from Leni Riefenstahl's movie "Triumph des Willens", know in English as "Triumph of the will". It includes the melody of the "Horst Wessel Lied", a song which was practically the anthem of the nation socialist party.

Here are the lyrics:
Die Fahne hoch!
Die Reihen fest (dicht/sind) geschlossen!
SA marschiert
Mit ruhig (mutig) festem Schritt
|: Kam'raden, die Rotfront und Reaktion erschossen,
Marschier'n im Geist
In unser'n Reihen mit :|

The Phantom of Obersalzberg

  • @Credyboy Know what, il agree there. deutschland is my heritage since teh 13th century. whatever it was associated with it is still part of her history

  • @yamahonkawazuki as far as I'm concerned it is the true national anthem

  • I should read what I write!

If Hitler had been intimately associated with it the place would have been dynamited after the area was occupied by the Americans, to prevent it becoming a shrine in the way the burnt out shell of the Berghof was razed and obliterated.

  • @Credyboy national socialist party aka nazi party anthem

  • @NJPurling "Hitler reportedly did not visit the Kehlsteinhaus & only visited it twice" Eh?
