Former Crystal Castles WR holder and King of Kong persona Mark Alpiger tries his hand at a candy cab, playing DOJ for the first time. A classic player meets a modern shmup.

The weekend he came by was spent playing CC on my machine, visiting Walter Day of Twin Galaxies, Paul Zimmerman (Phoenix WR holder), Tim McVey (former Nibbler marathon WR holder) and Paul Laue (former Star Castle Hard Rom WR holder). What a weird guy.

Separating shmups from "classics", barely grasping the concept of powerups and small hitbox here while having reportedly played DDP over a hundred times, lashing at Japanese for writing in Japanese in a Japanese-only game and for putting the stick on the left as if right-handedness had something to do with it, arguing that the screen is too large

I'm not sure if I like his attitude towards the game or not. He doesn't even make an impression of being an arcade WR holder.

Whatever you are talking about is hardly a response to my criticism of Alpiger.

In fact, you aren't making much sense either way. And neither does Alpiger when he says that the screen is too large or that left-handed stick is stupid because he is right-handed. That's among other things, of course. Or are you still insisting all this pertains to a niche (...within a niche within a niche...) the guy had no connection whatsoever? Over 20% of "classic" arcade games released in 80s were shmups.

@cactu What's offensive is his cluelessness about things he is expected to know and disrespectful, authoritative tone when talking about things he knows next to nothing about. "The screen is too big", "the stick is on the left and I'm right-handed", "the small text that bears no significance whatsoever is in Japanese in a game released for the Japanese", those excuses are childish (they're all basically "it's not my fault") and hilarious for a player of his status and supposed experience.

@moozooh Wow pretty weird I actually got you confused with prometheus who by the time I surfed through that forum he had a legendary 505Million run, the fun thing was that the he was fighting with some guys over 1st spot for 100million, 101 million 102 million then he submitted the first 2-ALL and showed four hundred and something and everyone else just gave up. Good times.

@wmotamedi Quit bitching. Billions and billions of people who don't know any better line up in front of Walmart to buy Gears of War or some other dreary FPS, game centers are rapidly shutting their doors in Japan... there's only a handful of real gamers left, the last thing we need is in-fighting about who's more hardcore.
