prue was killed by the wind demon and sources assasin shax at the end of season three, grief stricken piper tried to bring her back by casting a spell to find a lost witch but the spell led them to paige who is the daughter of their mother patty and her whitelighter sam making her a half whitelighter/half witch sister at the beginning of season 4. she reconstituted the power of three after prues funeral and together they vanquished shax once and for all.
