Cathie Travers playing Samba van Nuys

A few years ago through an unusual set of circumstances I introduced myself to a brilliant local musician and accordionist Peter Piccini. As a keyboard player I'd been working in the classical and avant-garde scenes... so my first meeting with Pete was a TOTAL revelation... utterly entranced... a sound I'd never witnessed before: the accordion in the hands of a jazz musician! That afternoon Peter also introduced me to recordings by Richard Galliano and Frank Marocco; at later sessions, players like Ernie Felice, Charles Magnante, Frosini, Leon Sash...and the list continues to grow :-)

Anyway, I took home from my first lesson a tape of two Frank Marocco tracks: Bluesette and this tune Samba Van Nuys... spent that Xmas holiday of 2001 transcribing and learning the head of the samba; the period was a significant turning point in my musical life and the tune will always be very special for me.
