The valley's West Side, a wide-open expanse of row crops, fruit trees and wetlands wedged between the San Joaquin River and the steep-sided Diablo Range, has taken its lumps in the news in recent years. Political controversy, a disastrous tire fire, some high-profile crimes and a "dumping ground" reputation have given the West Side a certain chip on its collective shoulder. But dyed-in-the-wool West Siders can't imagine living anywhere else. Maybe they know something the rest of the world is just discovering, as new West Side homes are quickly becoming the most popular draw in California's fastest growing region.
