It may be late in the year but I am going to try and grow some Swift seed potatoes in my greenhouse over the winter. The plan is to grow 3 seed potatoes in a 40litre potato planter bag and cover the bag with some fleece to protect from frost.

  • The leaves have just popped through and i just need to keep the frost off them. The growth has been very slow but that is what I would expect at this time of year.

  • I planted some 'Blues' at the end of September and they did well until I moved them into the greenhouse to avoid frost. They got blight off the peppers that I hadn't noticed had been infected by the last of the tomatoes. At least I know for next year.

Good luck, I'll be watching with great interest. You got me started with potatoes in bags and I had great success this year, so, thank you for all the information and advice you have posted.

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • @baconsoda Thanks for the comments. I just saw the potatoes sitting in the greenhouse and I was going to throw them out. I then thought I might aswell plant them and see what happens.

  • @potatospecialist I'm interested in seeing how your experiment turns out. I tried garbage can potatoes last summer and got some really nice potatoes. However, they grew in only the first foot of dirt in the can. The 18 inches of dirt above had nothing. I ended up with only about 3 lbs of potatoes. I want to try it again. I'll be watching to see how your method works. Maybe I'll try it! Thanks for posting the video.

  • Great vid They will grow .

I have grown potatoes the last two winters in my greenhouse and have done very well with them. I just planted some more on 12-06-10 for this year They havent broke ground yet but should be soon.

  • Have your potatoes put up leaves yet

  • Great idea & hope it works...that would be awsome if they flourished in the greenhouse. Pls keep us posted on their progress and results ! All the best !
