@Pfletch83 You are absolutly right. If not Mussolinis had totally fucked up on the Balkans,Hitler could have taken Moscow----perhaps.If Barbarossa started as planed Moscow would have been surrounded. But that dosent mean defeated.Remember Leningrads seige. And it is not sure that USSR would have faulted"just"because the capital was taken. But yes, things would have been very different if Moscow was 1st surrounded and then defeated with mass surrender of millions of troops and people..
@Pfletch83 Finances and industries usually win the wars, no the soldiers bravery. The Germans never had the minimal chance against the combined industry and resources from USA, Russia and the British Empire. Since December 1941, the war was practically lost for Germany.
@Pfletch83 .one country with a population of 80 mil managed to occupy most of Europe. If they had launched Operation Barbarossa a few weeks earlier they would have defeated the Russians.....they were on the outskirts of Moscow in winter 41. They came close to winning the war........this despite the lunatic military decisions of Hitler and Goering (in regard to the Luftwaffe). Yes they were an evil regime but you can't take away from the fact that as fighting men they were outstanding
@JIMBOSKI58 ....my mistake I was including civilians....sources vary Germany 7-10 mill including civilian. Soviet Union 20-26 million including civilians
@Pfletch83 .you're full of shit. In the Normandy campaign the best german units fought the British. The 2nd line units were sent to the US sectors because Hitler didn't rate US soldiers highly but had high regard for the british 'Tommy'. Givin the Germans had already been fighting 5 years and lost 10 000 000 men, and by 1944 had 14 year olds fighting for them and were massively outnumbered they sure put up a fight. The German soldier was vastly superior to his Amercican counterpart
@extere What tactics beat the Germans on the ground in battles like the Bulge?
It was won at the squad level, hard nosed grunts and airborne troopers that wouldn't run as expected, those were the guys that held it up enough to throw Hitlers gamble askew.
What was the main difference between the two?
The Germans massed fire with the machineguns the American view was that the machinegun should be in support of the infantry, which allowed our guys to move and have more flexability.
