The LP that launched the V.S.O.P. label is a reissue of a real rarity by the obscure but talented tenor J.R. Monterose, originally cut for Studio 4. With good backing from pianist Dale Oehler, bassist Gary Allen and drummer Joe Abodeely, Monterose displays a unique tone and the ability to play creatively within the advanced hard bop idiom.
Considering how well he plays on this set, it is surprising to realize that this was one of only two sessions (with the other set being even less known) led by J.R. Monterose during a 20-year period. Worth a search. Scatt Yanow, All Music

This album is available for the first time in over a decade. The highly sought-after, original LP has been spotted selling for approximately $1,000 dollars a copy.
I have a mint condition copy of this LP made a recording at Studio 4 in Rock Island, IL during the summer of 1964. . Hard to believe the money this album by J.R would bring. I listen to a CD copy and haven't played the LP in years. No turntable.J.R. would come to Rock Island on his off nights to play at a Davenport, IA coffee house called The Take Five. Our group would travel to play at his gig at The Tender Trap in Cedar Rapids. It was a fun summer to be sure.
