Hansen, who had played guitar for most of his life, began drumming about 15 years ago.
"I immediately fell in love with the sound of djembe ... I thought 'I want to learn how to play that instrument. I want to learn how to make that sound.'" he says.
The drumming provided him not only with a job -- he teaches private classes and also instructs several groups -- but with physical therapy. His years of guitar playing had left him with carpal tunnel syndrome.
"It was caused by a closed and down motion," he says. "The djembe technique was open and up. It did turn out to be a major part of me being able to play the guitar again."
And then there are drumming's more metaphysical aspects.
Balfour Boom member Cliff Asche, 81, explains it this way:
"Actually, you get picked up by the beat and the rhythm," he says. "At first you're drumming. Then you become one with the drum. ... You can really space out."

what should someone do if their wild hand has grown in timing and is playing much more significant rolls and such? And the feeling in tension is now much more free? Tribal frequency is what i play. Its nuts. btw im a lefty if that matters. thankyou.
