CIRCO AEREO

"Espresso is like a treasure chest full of the things of which circus is made, filled with beautiful sights, meticulous joint efforts, and inventive surprises." --Helsingin Sanomat, Finland

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE:
Espresso: European New Circus for the 21st Century

Astonishing virtuosity and subtle parody, Espresso is a high speed ride through the labyrinth of the history of circus—the kind of voyage where one's gaze can only grasp images, glimmers of light, and movement. A rabbit. A Rock Star. A Horse Trainer? In this acclaimed Franco-Finnish collaboration, traditional circus, cabaret, and contemporary circus meet in a series of playful and surprising scenes. "...intelligence and virtuosity are embedded in the magical vignettes..." (Le Monde).

Four artists create scenes and stories, earthbound and in mid-air, through the art of juggling, dance, and aerial performance. Music, props, and costumes change and transform, creating a fantasy typical of Circo Aereo's Artistic Director, Maksim Komaro.

Espresso is a co-production of Circo Aereo and Les Objets Volants, with contributions from Espace Simone Signoret (Vitry-le-François), Centre des Arts du Cirque de Basse Normandie (Cherbourg), Espoo (Finland) Municipal Theatre, and the Ministry of Culture - DMDTS.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Under the direction of Maksim Komaro and Jani Nuutinen, Finland's Circo Aereo, is widely recognized throughout Europe as a pioneer of New Circus. This beautiful "theater without words" mixes traditional circus arts such as juggling and aerial work with innovative cabaret theater, movement and charming humor. Currently one of the most active Finnish groups in terms of performing abroad, Circo Aereo is among the flagships of Finnish cultural exports by producing theater with a profoundly human touch.

Smart, imaginative, and inventive, Circo Aereo's barrier-breaking and open approach to the various forms of the performing arts mesmerizes and astonishes audiences throughout the world. Their latest and most famous work, Espresso, has enthralled audiences at the Parc de la Villette in Paris, Theatre du Vidy in Switzerland, and the Damascus Opera in Syria among many others. Active since 1996, the group has visited several distinguished festivals and theatres in more than 20 countries. This is the company's second American tour.
