This movement is part one of three, based on the short story "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Anderson.
In this movement, the "match girl" struggles to survive against the harsh and hostile environment, symbolized by the class distinctions and raw, pointed desire within the nightclub. During this movement, she reminisces about her childhood, her loving grandmother, and simpler, innocent times.
Music was composed for this production by Bernie Thomas for the North Dakota Ballet Company. All movement and dance choreographed by Job Christenson.
