In late March 2011, Long Island Wins online editor Ted Hesson traveled to Guatemala to cover the story of Emily Ruiz, a 4-year-old Long Island girl who, despite being a US citizen, was sent out of the country when her grandfather was deported.

A little more than a day after Ted arrived in Guatemala, Emily was returned to her parents in the US. But he stayed behind to seek out the stories of other US-citizen children who had been forced to live abroad because of immigration policy.

With the help of Guatemalan migrant and human rights expert Marila Rojas de Prinz, Ted found his way to the small village of Calderas, where there are many residents who had once lived in Postville Iowa, but had been deported.

When those deportees left the US, they brought their US-citizen children with them.

"A Generation in Exile" speaks to the overall issue of US-citizen sent out of the country because of their parents immigration status.
