[Dark Souls] How To Beat Executioner Smough and Dragon Slayer Ornstein

These 2 enemies can really put your Dark Souls skills to the test if you enter this battle unprepared.

Executioner Smough = Big enemy with hammer
Dragon Slayer Ornstein = Small enemy with spear

It's important to note that depending on which one you kill first, you may either get Soul of Ornstein (ascends to Dragonslayer Spear) or Soul of Smough (ascends to Smough's Hammer).

Killing ORNSTEIN FIRST will get you SOUL OF SMOUGH
Killing SMOUGH FIRST will get you SOUL OF ORNSTEIN

This video shows how to defeat Smough first, which is generally a tougher battle.

Smough is weak to lightning, so make sure to grab the Lightning Spear in a chest in Anor Londo near the first bonfire. Ornstein is weak to fire, so if you you've obtained the Large Ember from the Depths, you can go to Blacksmith Andre of Astora to create Quelaag's Furysword.

Equipping Dark Wood Grain Ring will make dodging attacks that much easier and is highly recommended. Also equip a good shield with lightning defense and stability (Eagle Shield works great)

Use the pillars in the room and Smough himself to block Ornstein's attacks or roll often to avoid being hit. Ornstein is a very quick attacker, where as Smough is slow but has far range due to his huge hammer. Most of Smough's attacks can be blocked easily with a shield or dodged completely in most cases. Lightning spear him a few times and roll out of the way, as if you take too many hits on Smough, Ornstein will be sure to come from behind or the side and hit you unless he's blocked by a pillar or Smough.

After Smough is dealt with and Ornstein powers up, it is important to STAY UNDER Ornstein as much as possible. The only time you need to roll away from him is when he jumps in the air and slams the ground with lightning creating an AOE attack. His AOE attack, and one other attack where he charges his spear with lightning and performs a grab attack are his most powerful moves and can do quite a bit of damage.

His grab attack cannot be blocked, but if you manage to stay completely under him, it shouldn't hit you at all.

Using a weapon with damage weaker than 250 or even 300 can make this a very long battle as his health will only chip away with every hit.

@spyfake134 Ornstein definitely has lightning resistance, and he is slightly weak to fire. Smough is definitely weak against lightning as the lightning spear does quite a bit of damage against him.

@SuperTerroristMan you need the "dark wood grain ring" . You join the forest hunters covenant and then betray them. Shiva of the east and a ghost ninja will appear after the betrayal . The ghost ninja is the one who drops the ring you need . Its a game changing item for sure. makes all the bosses easier .
