A sprawling impoverished Palestinian refugee camp in South Lebanon home to tens of thousands of refugees living in a maze of alleyways and narrow streets housed in cramped makeshift homes built with whatever rudimentary construction materials are available.
Leading a hand-to-mouth existence.
Youssef Mussallem ekes out a meager living washing vehicles for about $80.00 a week with which he has to support three children and keep a roof over their head.
Its no easy burden to bear but one that has recently been made a little lighter thanks to a shelter rehabilitation program spearheaded by the European Commission in Lebanon.
MAN:
With regards to the works done, they renovated my home from 20% to 98% tiles windows and ceiling.
Now the flurry of donor-generated building activity has moved next door.
European Commission REP:
Some Palestinian families are still living in very bad conditions inside and outside the refugee camps there is a humanitarian need As a humanitarian donor the European Commission is here to support the Palestinian refugees in improving their living conditions that is in partnership with our partners Premiere Urgence and the Norwegian Refugee Council.
For Amal Zeibak too life is an uphill struggle. Like Youssef she has three children to care for.
WOMAN:
This whole house is destroyed. Look at the wall. And here its leaking. In the winter the water comes down onto us when it rains. The house is destroyed. Completely. The doors leaking as well. Its all destroyed. This is where it all leaks , from up there to down here. And the whole wall is crumbling.
But thats going to change again thanks to the European Comission Humanitarian program.
WOMAN:
Were waiting for them to clean the wall and plaster it. And to fix the ceiling as well and everything. Theyre going to fix it.
The program has already improved the living standards of thousands of refugees.
European Commission REP:
Since 2007 to date projects worth 4.5 million Euros have helped more than 2,200 refugee families which are about equal to 11,000 persons in assisting them in their shelters in the South of Lebanon and in the Beirut suburbs so that we can help them live in safe shelters and decent conditions
Much more work remains to be done but one brick at a time house by house for these refugees a better future is being built.

  • Yes, Israel is such a 'peace' loving state.

That's why the IDF is on the border of Lebanon right now, making war like noises and AGAIN threatening to invade.

The only 'peace' Israel wants is:

A 'piece' of Syria; a 'piece' of Jordan; a 'piece' of Iraq; a 'piece' of Saudi Arabia; a 'piece' of Turkey; a 'piece' of Egypt; a 'piece' of Lebanon and whatever 'pieces' are left of Palestine after Apartheid Israel finishes its campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians.

  • Join a gang, you have the strength of its weakest member, the intelligence of its most uninformed. The jews are victims unto themselves, the way they treat their neighbors will lead to the end or destruction of their culture. The world will not walk over a cliff when the jewish community wants their space because they double their population every 17 years. Their children would change, but they beat them into submission, and don't allow them access to the internet, Its so sad, they are victims.
