Planting a tree seedling is very easy. In this video, Lowe's gives you step-by-step instructions about how to plant a tree seedling in a pot, so that it can stay healthy and grow enough to one day be planted in the ground.
First, choose a suitable container for your tree sapling. Lowe's recommends growing your tree in a container for one year before transplanting it to a permanent location in the landscape.
Fill a three quart, or larger, container with well draining potting soil and a little bit of manure. Fill the container, leaving about an inch and a half of room from the top of the container.
Dig a hole big enough to contain your seedlings roots with a bit of extra room. Place your seedlings roots into the hole, and fill in with soil snugly around the roots. Tamp the soil around the seedling. Top the container off with soil.
Water the plant completely to saturation, watering until water comes out of the bottom of the container. Place the pot outside in a sunny location. Wait until the soil in the root zone is almost dry, and then water thoroughly.
After your seedling has grown for several months, it is fine to feed your tree with a quality plant food. Be sure to follow the packaging instructions to avoid harming your tree.
In about a year it will be time to transplant your tree. Early spring and early fall are good times for transplanting a tree. Pick a spot at least 10 feet away from buildings, power lines and other trees and vegetation.
After your tree is old enough, you can plant it in the ground. For instructions about how to plant a tree, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9MxrQyyvxs
