Marslike planet X crashes into primordial earth, it's core sinks into the earth, increases the size of earth and greatly reduces it's rotation. Debris from both planetary bodies is ejected, some lost into space forever, most onto and around earth, eventually the left over material coalesces in a process called "accretion" into the moon.
That's why the moon was made of such similar stuff to earth... Or so the theory goes.
Oh, there's so much I don't know about astrophysics. I wish I'd read that book by that wheelchair guy.
