Nitro-powered cars and trucks are more popular than ever thanks to their relative ease of use, the visceral experience they provide thanks to the sounds of their engines and their tremendous tops speeds. When you're first starting out with a nitro vehicle, the learning curve can be relatively steep in learning how to start and tune your vehicle's engine. While manuals can tell you what to do to get the most out of your engine sometimes it can be challenging to understand what's being described if you don't have the experience to back it up. That's where this guide comes into play as we've taken the next step to help show you exactly what the components of your engine are that affect performance, how to tune the engine and how to help keep things running smoothly.
We've been lucky to catch up with Dan Hissam of Losi. Dan is the man behind some of the latest engines to come off the assembly line under the Losi name including the 350 and 454 engines found in the 8IGHT 2.0 RTR and the 8IGHT-T 2.0 RTR along with the Nitrotec-series of engines. Dan brings his many years of experience to the Losi group and we were lucky enough to spend some time with him. From understanding the different components of your engine and carburetor, covering basic tuning terms and descriptions, and helping you get your tune on, we hope this will provide you with the information you need to become a successful engine tuner.

  • I have eight t with a 454 and it runs fine on the box but when I put it on the ground and apply throttle it takes off but when I let off the throttle it dies

  • @tomahawk16 Sounds like your low-speed needle is set incorrectly. Richen the bottom 2-hours to see if that helps.

  • I have a 8ight 2.0 rtr 350 engine but i only use 33% fuel is that okay to use? and should i, at the end of the day use after run when putting away my engine?

  • @KILLdaBOOSTERz 33% is a little high, I don't know that they recommend exceeding 30% in the manual. When your done for the day a little after run oil is always a good idea.

  • i have a losi 454 in a losi 8ight t at the high end revs it starts to cut out ,theres no smoke and u have to let off or it will stall sometimes and i have no clue why plz help

  • @codybobo101 Couple things here. First set your needles back to the factory defaults and tune from there. Second, check the engine for air leaks. If it's sucking air it will throw off your tune. Third use quality fuel that's fresh.

  • @HorizonRCdotCom what temp scale are you referring to? F or C? Thanks!

  • @roostertails250 What is your temperature alert set to? It might be low. You should see temps between 230-260 realistically.

  • i just bought the losi 8ight 2.0 using blue thunder 20%. break in is very important to me i did that complete. but im getting alot of top end smoke but it runs at a descent temp till i bring it in an stop then the dx3s high temp alarm goes off is that normal?
