It is simply a matter of math. Subtraction. If you first add all the top figures you will count 5 and then when you add all the bottom figures you will also count 5 although there are 6 faces in total to begin with. The key is that 2 of the faces, 1 at the top and 1 at the bottom, are not originally combined by 2 halves. But when you exchange the top papers every face becomes a combination of 2 halves which in effect eliminates 1 of the original 2 non halved faces. So therefore 6 minus 1 = 5.
