oh snap! Watch the KANSAS video. It is played in STANDARD tuning. Where did you get the idea that it is not? Granted, someone else might have made an arrangement in an alternate tuning, but KANSAS always played it in STANDARD. Watch the videos.

Slightly wrong picking pattern. The pattern is strings |5&2---4-3-5-2-4-3-| (the first two notes being picked simultaneously, of course). Travis picking. Your thumb should be playing a steady alternating bass line of strings 5/4/5/4. Kansas plays the song considerably faster. And you do not "play more notes than the original," just different notes. I prefer the original!
