THE KANGAROO, often colloquially referred to as 'roo'... are endemic to Australia, and is one of Australia's most iconic animals. Its emblem is used on the Australian Coat of Arms and on its currency, as well as being used as logos and mascots. Kangaroos have a long muscular tail for balance, and large powerful hind legs, and large feet adapted for hopping at great speeds. Like most marsupials female kangaroos have a pouch in which joeys complete post natal development. The young joey is born alive at a very immature stage, where it is only about 2cm long and weighs less than a gram. Immediately after birth it crawls up the mother's body and enters the pouch. The newborn attaches its mouth to one of four teats, which enlarges to hold the young animal in place. After several weeks the joey becomes more active and gradually spends more time outside the pouch, which it completely leaves between 7 and 10 months of age.
