I hope this will help people to use the Powershot Sx40 HS and to get what each button does. I will do more help videos in the near future if they seem to be of any use to anyone :)

  • Also the slo mos and HD....Thanx - SAS

  • @watchvdos Slo mo is great with good lighting but flickers when lighting is low. You can't change many settings when shooting video so you may find it too restricted if you are wanting to film in a big variety of locations.

  • Hi, need help decide among Sony DSC HX100V, Canon PowerShot SX 40HS and Nikon CoolPix P510 (though not in yet)...based on:

    1. Actual image quality and not on camera's LCD.

    2. Panoramability.

    3. 3D (I don't have a 3D TV set yet...;-( ..

    4. Zoomability with high image quality.

    5. Superior macro clarity.

    6. Most importantly, tele macro with again high image quality.

Would appreciate inputs and suggestions. Thanx - SAS

  • @watchvdos I've not used any apart from the SX40 but I can tell you the following:

The image quality is very good but if you want to shoot in RAW you will have to use the Canon Hack (CHDK).

You can shoot panorama and it comes with a program to use on the computer, it doesn't stitch on the camera.

    No 3D.

Zoom is amazing, can get great pics of the moon.

Macro is also very good, check out my blog or facebook for examples.

Tele-Macro isn't really ideal with this cam, it's better for up close.

  • Fantastic tutorials, thank you very much. Could you tell me please what is the difference between 850mm digital and 850mm optical? I haven't bought the camera yet, just waiting for the better half to give me the thumbs up!! Jim NZ

  • @zl2bmh Optical zoom is all done through the lens, so you actually have a mechanism doing the zoom inside the lens. Digital zoom is done through the camera so it is essentially generating more zoom for you without actually being able to see that far naturally through the lens.

Digital zoom isn't as good quality as the camera is basically just enhancing what it can see to try and get a bit closer so you often find it can look a little bit fuzzy or lacks in detail in comparison to optical zoom.

  • @FatDragon100 Thank you. This gives me a fair idea on which camera to go for. I guess a few asking around would not confuse me further. :-)

  • Thank you

  • @DhAoUaDiAMINE231 I don't really feel the need for it but if you are using it for work it may be worth considering. It's not something I personally need so I can't really advise you beyond that.
