@marktakacs California has had several historical Tsunamis. The 1964 earthquake in Alaska hit it pretty hard. Geologically, off the coast of Oregon/Washington is the Juan de Fuca trench which can generate "Japan like" tsunamis. Hawaii also like to spall off huge chunks of itself which tend to make monster tsunamis. And all the normal pacific rim activity if lined up right can make some nastiness beyond the usual flip phone youtube fodder.

Have you been down there during high winds and rain? I know those times are rare but that's when it gets all foamy like this. I remember one night when the full moon was out plus it was windy, and the waves were crazy high...higher than this. This isn't very scary to me. That pier has been rebuilt recently and it is strong. That's why they call HB Surf City :)
