One of the term that I have learned during my Scuba Diving Course is Hyperventilation
You can find the meaning of this term at following URL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperventilation
This is the technique that I normally use when I want to do Scuba diving in Swimming pool without air cylinder (That is correct, Scuba tank is not filled with Oxygen, as most of the people think, It is filled with normal filtered air).
By using the technique of hyperventilation one can get rid of most of the Carbon Dioxide from the body. As stated in our text book, We feel suffocation not because of lack of Oxygen, but because of excess of Carbon dioxide.
Lets perform hyperventilation together (no cheating...)
Step 1).
Keep an eye on your watch and note the time.
Step 2).
Take a deep breath and fill your lungs with air.
Step 3).
Hold your breath as long as you can (If you cannot hold it any longer then after exhaling, start breathing normally).
Step 4). Note the time difference i.e. how long have you been able to hold your breath.
In my case it was 63 Seconds
Now lets repeat above steps, but before repeating these steps we will do hyperventilation.
Step 1).
Breath air in your lungs (Through your nose) as deep as you can.
Once your lungs are filled (don't hold your breath), then breath all air out (As deep as you can)
Repeal Step 1 three time, without taking any break in between steps. (Please do not repeat above step more then three times)
Step 2).
After repeating step 1 three times, then In hale as much air as you can (Record the time).
Step 3).
Hold your breath as long as you can (If you cannot hold it any longer then after exhaling start breathing normally).
Step 4). Note the time difference i.e. how long have you been able to hold your breath.
In my case it was 91 Seconds
After performing hyperventilation, I am able to swim the entire length of swimming pool (25 ft) under water without surfacing.
Yes, I use Fins to help me move faster under water.
Warning:
One should never do hyperventilation more then 3 times. Specially when you are performing this technique in swimming pool. The reason is that you may not feel suffocation, but in reality your body still needs oxygen. If your brain is deprived of oxygen then it shuts down on you and you can become unconscious, If you are at the bottom of the swimming pool and you become unconscious then you will breath water and drown to death (Make sure life gards are around you even it you are doing hyperventilation three times).
Hope fully you have learned something new today.
you are welcome ThePbyguy!. Hyperventilaqtion is so simple technique and yet so powerfull. I am trying to swim underwater 25ft without fins. I am pretty sure I will be able to do it by using hyperventilation (I just don't want to over do hyperventilation and risk my life)
