1974 The Amputee Made for the American Film Institute while Eraserhead was in financial limbo. The AFI was testing two different stocks of black and white video and enlisted Frederick Elmes to test each one. Lynch asked Elmes if he could shoot something with this stock and so he and Catherine Coulson stayed up all night writing script. The result was a one shot scene with Catherine Coulson about a woman attempting to write a letter while a female nurse (played by Lynch) tends to her leg stumps. (two versions 5 minutes/4 minutes)

To criticise would draw a response of "You're just not deep enough to get Lynch's works." but seriously, this is absolute shit. Lynch fucks up everything he touches with his lame absurdity for the sake of absurdity.
I love David Lynch. Just cuz u don't understand a film doesn't make it a bad film. It just means he's a higher intellectual than us. :) Cuz i don't even understand some of his work. But i respect it, cuz it DOES mean something. and is well done.
Actually yes he was a filmmaker, he made films. But seriously check out something like The Grandmother, his third short film, a creative and totally legitimate movie. The Amputee was just an experiment for the AFI to test some film stock, as you would know if you had read the description.
