Written by Buddy Holly and Bob Montgomery - Tommy Allsup played lead on the recording done in Clovis, New Mexico at Norman Petty Studios July-August 1958 with Buddy on rhythm. He did play this song on the final tour in 1959. Here we see a Crickets version live. Joe B. did do the original bass on the recording although he was eventually replaced by George Attwood. This version was recorded live ion Brockville in April of 2005

  • This is a terrific job! I mentioned this somewhere else so I don't want to overtell the story. But I was living in Fargo North Dakota in February, 1959 and we had plans to attend the dance party in Moorehead, Minnesoata (across the Red River) -- Buddy was scheduled to land a Hector Field (the old airport) only 6 miles from our farm -- but we did not hear about the plane crash details right away as a passenger jet had crashed too. Buddy was one of my first heros! Thanks! for the memory.

  • Thank you for sharing that - It means a lot to me. I feel that we all connect to Buddy on some level because of his unassuming yet brilliant demeanour. Indeed he is our "Buddy". He gave us a lifetime of music.

  • Is there almost like a calypso feel to this song...I like the guitar parts a lot. Great band performance!

  • Holly was influenced by the Latin rhythms of the time - I believe he co-wrote this one with Bob Montgomery (his original partner). Bob is the father of the very talented Kevin Montgomery - singer songwriter guitarist

  • You lot are good. I've watched all your performances and you interpret the songs of Buddy nicely in a new way, although still close to the original. You bring the music back to life. Thanks for sharing.

Have a look at my efforts if you get a chance (just practising at home)

    Cheers

  • Love it!! You even have the hiccup down. That drumbeat is great. You've so got the Holly tone down. Wow, it's like hearing the Clovis sound all over again.
