(INTRO) President-elect Barack Obama joined the celebrations of his inauguration Sunday on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
The building honors one of Obama's inspirations, President Abraham Lincoln, who kept the nation together and ended slavery during the Civil War in the 1860s.
Some of the world's top musical artists gave a free concert for tens-of-thousands of people gathered on Washington's mall, along with the first family.
The performers included Bruce Springsteen, Usher, Shakira, Stevie Wonder, U2, and Beyonce.
Hollywood joined in, with actors like Tom Hanks read speeches by Lincoln. Golfer Tiger Woods, who usually avoids politics, made and appearance.
President-elect Obama gave a five-minute speech, telling the crowd he would take their voices and common dreams with him to the White House.
President-elect Barack Obama
"Yours are the voices I will take with me every day when I walk into that Oval Office. The voices of men and women who have different stories but hold common hopes."

"Democracy in America was never the same as Liberty in Europe. In Europe Liberty was a great life-throb. But in America Democracy was always something anti-life. The greatest democrats, like Abraham Lincoln, had always a sacrificial, self-murdering note in their voices. American Democracy was a form of self-murder, always. Or of murdering somebody else. . .
