  • Hi Claire, just got my first allotment and intend to strim everyhing down - nettles bindweed etc, what would you do with all the weeds I cut down before I dig? Burn them, bag them, something else?

  • @TheLittlePlinth If you're allowed to have fires on your plot I would burn them. Put them in a bottomless bin, or something metal. It's just safer that way. Put cardboard and paper in the bottom, and start as you would a BBQ, but without the charcoal. Have marshmallows standing by. If you're not allowed fires, them bag and take to the tip.

  • I did my first garden by hand as well, you find interesting things and it's hard work. I never used a tiller, but its worth it!

  • @ILuvCaroline If I had to do it all over again, then I'd hire a tiller. I don't tink my back could take it again.

  • I plan on watching every video!! You are an excellent teacher. The first video I saw of yours was about kohlrabi, you put me at ease with the planting!

  • @ILuvCaroline There's quite a few video's to get through 148 I think, so good luck. Thanks for watching them ALL, it's quite a feet. I hope you find them interesting and useful. Claire

  • @angiesnowden I have suggested that idea to other people. I look back on that video, and wonder why I didn't suggest it. I was younger then, and had more energy. If I had to start from scratch again, I'd hunt down a load of old carpet.

  • Try covering weeds with anything that will keep out the light to help kill them off. Old carpet, sheets of tin, cardboard or newspaper with something on it to stop it blowing away. After a couple of months most weeds will have died unless your grass has underground runners. Anything to save your back.

  • @mrcrazypete82 Hi there, Good luck with your new allotment. Concentrate on clearing for this first year. If you get chance to get anything in then that's a bonus. If you've got any questions just ask.

    Claire
