As an integral part of the EU assistance to Afghanistan, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) has funded a shelter support programme to the deprived people of Herat province. The project which started in May 2007 has provided shelters in the two districts of Shindand and Ghoriyan in Herat province. Returnees from Iran and those displaced in Herat were provided with 250 shelters from ECHO. Due to the harsh conditions faced by the people, ECHO will provide an additional 150 shelters in the second phase of the project. This project has been implemented by Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
