I know I haven't uploaded in awhile, and I'm sorry, but I'm not much into Youtube anymore. I listen to music, but my shipping days are primarily over. This is something I'm entering in a contest :)

//

You could say that I don't always love my family. Correction: I love my family, but I hate the choices they've made. And it's one of those days, the days where things are being thrown around the house and my mom is threatening to leave again.

Thus why I grabbed a twenty from her wallet, bought a smoothie, and headed down to the beach to think. The sound of the waves thundering against the mud reverberates, calming my thoughts, and here I can be alone.

Here I don't have to put up a face.

"So, I got a pen-pal," Ellie says as she plops down beside me.

I smile tightly at her, trying to be supportive, but inside I'm wondering why the hell she had to come find me today. I curse under my breath, blaming myself for focusing too hard on the sound of the crashing waves; I didn't even hear her sneak up on me.

I just want to be alone.

"Uh-hu," I mumble, taking a sip of my banana-coconut smoothie. It's been my favorite flavor since Bobbie's party in first grade, and I'm not one for trying new things.

"Everything okay?" Ellie places a hand on my shoulder, and I flinch without meaning to. "Hey, Max, what's wrong? You're shivering."

I shake my head, "Just cold."

"Don't lie to me, you ass," Ellie scolds. She spots the smoothie dangling from my hand. "Didn't you get me one?"

I roll my eyes, but pluck the strawberry-mango smoothie out from under my raised legs and hand it to her. She smiles, instantly gratified, but I know that she expected it to begin with. We have this thing where she pays for nothing, insisting that it gives me a chance to show some "damn etiquette."

"Thank you," Ellie mumbles from around the red tip of the straw.

I shrug, "No big."

I kind of wish she would notice that something's off about me, but she's never been one to pick out the changes in someone's behavior. She tends to be a bit happy-go-lucky, and while irritating, it's one of the things I really enjoy about her personality. She's not afraid to be herself; that's why I tolerate her.

She's not like any of those bitches who prance around being two-faced. Ellie may be an oblivious nag, but she's real.

"My parents are fighting again," I tell her, trying to act nonchalant about it.

But it doesn't work. Her gray-green eyes are already darkening with concern, and she rests her head on my shoulder. It's her way of trying to comfort me, I know, so I don't shake her off.

"What about this time?" Ellie asks me.

"Does it really matter?" I ask, laughing bitterly. "Just the same stuff: mortgage, bills, who's going to give me their car when I go off to UCSD."

"They still haven't given you a car?" Ellie snorts, amused. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but that's kind of pathetic.

She's real, alright. A bit too real sometimes.

"Yeah, it is pathetic." I wrap an arm around her waist as I notice her reluctant shivers. "So, you said you got a pen-pal?"

Ellie nods against my shoulder, "His name is Robert, he's the same age as us, and quite the intellectual. Funny, too."

"I didn't know you knew the word 'intellectual,'" I tease, rubbing her back to let her know I'm joking. "This pen-pal thing isn't dangerous at all, right? I don't want you to be posting personal information that can be hacked or anything."

Ellie lips purse, "Worried about me, I see."

"Nah," I reply. "I know you can take care or yourself, Ellie."

Gray-green eyes meet mine and she smiles, "You know me too well, Max."

Ellie relaxes back against me, and we turn to watch the waves crash. Every once in awhile, no words are necessary, just the company. And as much as I don't want to admit it, I'm really glad she's here beside me.

I need someone real to hang on to.
