Steel Homes takes the viewer inside the world of a self storage warehouse, uncovering the hidden treasures and secrets behind the locked doors. Moving from steel cage to steel cage, we encounter tales of heartbreak, loneliness and despair, and stories of liberation, adventure and leaving the past behind.
A co-production between Quark Films and Odd Girl Out Productions, Steel Homes was made for the Scottish Documentary Institute and received its premiere at IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam), one of the biggest documentary film festivals in the world, in November 2008. Following on from the success of Steel Homes, the director is currently developing a longer film about self storage auctions in Los Angeles which she is intending to film later this year.
Steel Homes is the directors follow-up to her last multi-award-winning films The Intimacy of Strangers and City of Cranes, which won, amongst others, the Award for Best Documentary Short at Los Angeles Film Festival, the Jury Award at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and the Audience Award at Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival. Her latest film 'The Solitary Life of Cranes' premiered at Britdoc Film Festival last year, where it won the award for Best British Short. Made with the support of The Channel 4 British Documentary Film Foundation, the film was described as "one of the most absorbing documentaries of the year" in The Observer newspaper.
