[Raw Food] Episode 49 - Jenna in the Jungle - Rollinia (Raw Food)
Raw Food: Rollinia is a genus in the family Annonaceae. While it is widely recognised as a distinct genus a recent monograph advocates its inclusion in Annona[1], which also contains custard apples and soursops. Sometimes called biriba, species of Rollinia are tropical trees that bear round, yellow fruit. They need a warm and humid climate to grow well.

Not all fruits produced by this family are edible, but Rollinia deliciosa is. The flavor of the fruit is described as similar to that of apple custard or lemon meringue pie. Ripe fruit is very soft and easily bruised. The fruit cannot be stored for long periods of time. It is usually eaten fresh, but Brazilians use it to make wine.

Jenny: So, Jenna. This is Rollinia. This is one of the most popular fruits around here. Its wonderful. Tastes like apple custard. You can tell its ripe when it starts to get the black tips on the end. Its a really beautiful tree. The leave are long. Its lush.

Jenna: Im very curious to see what it looks like inside.

Jenna: This reminds me a little of the way the Jackfruit looks.

Jenny: Its actually related to the Soursop, but its sweet, not sour.

Jenna: And you just scoop it out like this?

Jenny: Just scoop it out. This is another fruit that can be used to make pies, or you can just eat it like this.

Jenna: Oh my gosh! That is spectacular! It is exactly like an apple custard.

Jenny: Maybe a little bit better even.

Jenna: Even better. I love it!

Jenny: Like I said, people get really excited about this.

Jenna: Im very excited about it. And how long is the season for these?

Jenny: It really varies on the tree. We got this from our neighbor next door and our trees are not going off. Theyre just now flowering. So it just varies on the variety and the individual trees.

Jenna: This is absolutely heavenly. What an incredible breakfast this would be? Can this only be found on Hawaii?

Jenny: I believe it can also be found on Malaysia, Indonesia.

Jenna: Very special fruit. Now, it is worth coming to Hawaii for this Rollinia!

  • it smells good and taste good i love it, but hey don't eat to much of it you will get an abdominal pain and diarrhea

  • absolutely delicious! No doubt about this fruit!

  • @Avatar2kelty: I suspect some supermarkets resort to importing fruits which were picked too early or too late out of the tree. Unlike bananas which can be picked green and allowed to ripen during transport, the best sweet or sour sops need more time on the tree to develop flavor and texture. Then when they DO get to that stage where they can be picked and allowed to ripen on their own, they ripen SO fast. (They must be eaten or sold in 36-48 hours, or you get half-rotten mush.)

  • She looks like the girl from natural born killers!

  • OMG, I saw those at an asian store in San Diego. I was curious about it, but was a bit afraid of trying it. I didn't know what to expect, and to think that it tastes better than apple custard... Thanks! Now I MUST have some.
