Chris Stones, Gavin Bradshaw and Jamie Barnes play historic xylophone-type instruments made out of stone, known technically as lithophones. They play lithophone concerts in order promote Cumbrian museums where these curious instruments are often housed. They have done this since 2005, and have played in venues including The Royal Festival Hall, Sage Gateshead, University of Leeds, Sheffield Millennium Galleries, Honister Mine and right across Cumbria. The main instrument they play is The Musical Stones of Skiddaw housed at Keswick Museum and Art Gallery. This is a 13foot long, 70-note lithophone made by local stonemason Joseph Richardson in 1837 from hornfels rock collected from between Skiddaw and Blencathra.
