John Woodruff, Sr., were it not for his career having been interrupted due to the occurrence of World War II, would be universally recognized as the greatest middle distance runner of all time, let alone of his own era. Having battled all manner of prejudice and injustice, and having arrived on the University of Pittsburgh's campus with literally 25 cents in his pocket, the track and field legend-to-be stood on the precipice of greatness when he arrived on campus as a gangly freshman. He will be best remembered for his 1936 800M Olympic Gold Medal, and not the world record that was stolen from him.   • I had the pleasure of meeting John Woodruff 6 years ago my freshman year of high school...as a track athlete he had a great impact on my life...but i realized later he had a huge impact on the world

    As a former collegiate half miler, I only have one word..........................­..AWESOME!

  • I had the honor of meeting Mr. Woodruff before he passed away. He is truly a great man and one of the best runners of all time.

    I run his 5k race is every in Connellsville, PA and finish on the track by the tree. It gets me an extra kick at the end of the race!
