Shooting for 1,000,000 points in Super Mario Bros on NES!!!

Will the points counter stop at 999,999 or reset to 0 or could it possibly add another number in front of the 9? Either of these seemed possible with the first 2 very likely but the last not so much. Always wanted to try this so what better time than when my mario fanatic nephew was over.
