Tommy is a toddler with SPD, and Asperger's. Lining up objects, smearing his face with food, jumping, trashing the house, are just some of his sensory seeking/autism behaviors on this video. I wouldn't change him for the world...... you can read more about SPD at my mom blog;

@dallasquinley I am glad your daughter is in therapy. It will make a big difference, for her, and you. These little people have so much to share, if their sensory issues did not distract them. I have become such buddies with Tommy, now that his brain has slowed down enough to let me get to know him. We never could because of the chaos.. the meltdowns, the frustrations, etc.. We are better parents having gone through our journey. Best of luck to you!

1958boom, Tom is now 5.. And yes, he has a mild form of Aspergers. He still has sensory issues.. sticky fingers cause meltdowns, school buses, and children singing cause hands over the ears. The point about sensory issues is this: do the issues cause behavioral difficulties in the child? Do the issues cause the child to not be able to function in society? Does the child need accommodations in school because of their sensory issues? With OT, SPD can be somewhat managed, not perfected, managed.

@1958boomergirl you make a valid point but you have seen it to really know and believe it and the things mentioned are just a few. MANY MANY people have sensory issues...I do and so do u most likely, yet they didn't hinder us from communication like my daughter. My daughter can say "I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map...I AM THE MAP!!" but she will not request a drink nor does she even realize that I am her mother...she doesn't know what mom even means and she is almost 3 years old...

@101footballmaster ---he reminds me of my daughter so much, lining things up, I always think she could really be an architect or something almost genius like sometimes. Anyway, my daughter loved playing with paper when she was younger, it could keep her attention more then anything, is that how TOmmy was? We are doing therapy and I am getting ready to check out the new video u have because I have a new found hope for my baby girl...THANKS FOR POSTING

@101footballmaster I have asperger's and am just now finishing up uni with a biochem degree. Don't ever think of it as a disorder, there are things he can do others can't.

So beautiful! I have a 3 year old boy with ASD and he is so similar. It gives me such a happy/sad feeling to watch this video. Thank you. It is at once heart-warming and very moving. All the best to you and your family. x

5/2011 update on Tommy: lining up objects often is one sign of autism spectrum like behaviors.. The other activites, like flapping his arms, and jumping while watching tv, trashing the house were not just on occasion, but all the time. it is sensory seeking.. He has been doing well with early intervention, behavior therapy, and preschool for autistic kids. Aspergers cannot be diagnosed until age 3, when lack of social behavior can be observed. He's very bright, and gives me WOW moments always.
