To mow tall crops such as thatching wheat or water reed with a scythe you need to fit a cradle to hold the straw from falling back over the snath (handle) as you mow.  I have tried different styles of bow cradle.  In this video blacksmith Andy window makes me a fitting based on a traditional design from East Yorkshire.

  • This was my first trial having re created the yorkshire pattern bow from the book. I have not yet got either the cradle or mowing technique quite right - still working on it.

  • in spite of the cradle, the grain is still deposited in an unruly mess in the windrow.
